How do I create a secure network in Windows 7? If you have previous experience in setting up secure networks using windows xp you probably won’t have too much trouble setting up a secure network in Windows 7. Or will you? In Windows 7 you have to click a lot more options and or dig through a bunch of layers in order to accomplish the tasks compared to XP.
in order to accomplish setting up our network correctly we must not have more than 10 computers in our network. If you have more than 10 computers that will be sharing and accessing shared files then you will need a server edition of windows. If you have less than 10 computers on your network then you can use Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate which I will be using for this exercise. I do not recommend Home Premium especially if you want to be able to login to your network remotely.
The first thing we have to accomplish is joining our computers to a workgroup and then give each computer in our workgroup a name. The default workgroup name in Windows 7 is Workgroup. Sounds pretty lame so let’s rename the workgroup to something that makes more sense to us. I like to name my workgroup something I would recognize as being mine. For example I use my company name SEO Webz. You will have to give every computer in your home/business the same workgroup name. While we are renaming the workgroup we can also accomplish giving our computer a name at the same time so our computer is recognized by the network. Give every computer a different name. For example you could use LWS1 and LWS2. LWS1 would be Laptop work station 1 and LWS2 would be Laptop work station 2. To rename the workgroup and give your computer a name do the following:

Ok, now that we have renamed all computers and named our workgroup it is time to manage our network settings.
To manage your network settings do the following:

Next we have to select our network location Public or Work. I always choose Work. To do this go back to the Network and Sharing Center and click on choose homegroup and sharing options. Next, click on leave homegroup. Next, click on Home Network and then click Work Network and then click close. While you are in the Network and Sharing center you will notice a section called Sharing and Discovery. Turn the following options on while you are in there. Network Discovery – File Sharing and Printer Sharing. Turn the following option off. Public Folder Sharing.
Your secure Windows 7 network is now setup and configured properly. We can now share some folders to test our work.
